What Is Acne?
What causes acne is simple. A build up of dead skin cells within the pore. Sounds easy to fix, right? Unfortunately, it is also hereditary and with all the pore clogging ingredients in skin and hair care products it makes it a little more difficult. Also, iodides in foods(like broccoli) and even vitamins can make acne worse as well. Here’s a little more in-depth look.
Healthy pores shed about one layer of skin cells per day. So, why are some people more liable to suffer from acne? What causes acne for them? In an acne prone person, the pore sheds up to 5 times more layers of dead skin cells per day. The body can’t keep up with the skin cell turnover and a micro-comedone is born. Medically, this is called “retention hyperkeratosis” or dead skin cells turning over too quickly for the pore to get rid of them. They get all sticky when the body produces more oil and become a plug in the pore. It can take up to 3 months for that microcomedone to reach the surface of the skin when we consider it a blackhead/ whitehead or pustule. Some become cystic or inflamed. That is also determined by your heredity. That is why it can take at least 3 months to get you clear. Those comedones are working their way up through the layers of the skin while we are preventing new ones from forming. This is why your home care regimen is super important for you to use correctly and every day. We can only do so much in the office. So clear skin is in your hands. It’s all about prevention.
