Acne Specialist or Dermatologist?
When you’re faced with acne, selecting the right practitioner is an important first step toward getting clearer skin. But should you make an appointment with a dermatologist for your acne? It’s a reasonable consideration because dermatologists are skin doctors, after all.
But what if there were a better option that offered specialized treatment for your skin condition? Wouldn’t it be worth it to consider the alternative? Let’s weigh why it may be better to choose an acne specialist instead of a dermatologist.
Why not go with a dermatologist?
Dermatologists are known as “skin doctors” because they’ve studied everything there is to know about skin and its diseases. This includes psoriasis, eczema and skin cancers, to name a few.
Because it’s a skin disease, many dermatologists include acne treatment as part of their practice. Unfortunately, many well-meaning dermatologists simply provide prescriptions that never really improve the condition of their patients’ skin.
If you’ve visited a dermatologist before, this scenario may sound familiar to you:
The dermatologist barely looks up from his or her medical chart. In fact, the doctor didn’t even notice you were still wearing your make up. Your dermatologist then asks you a few rote questions and jots down a prescription for you to try out. The doctor also recommends a new skin care product to pick up while you’re at the pharmacy. You’re patted on the back and encouraged to revisit in six weeks’ time.
You fill the prescription, hoping for a miracle in a jar. You also buy the new skin care product. Last time it was Cetaphil, this time it’s Neutrogena. Maybe this concoction will answer my prayers, you say to yourself.
But no. Your skin is still breaking out. It’s red and irritated from all of the prescriptions. Not only that, you’re really tired of being a human guinea pig.
What about medical spas?
Medical spas can offer good results for some acne sufferers, but it can be a crapshoot. While you may encounter a great esthetician who knows a lot about treating acne, it’s more than likely that you’ll be treated by someone who has no idea about what acne actually is from a medical standpoint. The esthetician may apply products with detrimental, pore clogging ingredients. While these products may be high quality, they can still cause break-outs.
What’s worse is that there’s no accountability or consistency in product use. The products used on your skin may simply be “the product of the month,” which may change the next time you visit.
Why try an acne specialist?
Unlike dermatologists and general estheticians, we focus specifically on treating on acne. We’re licensed estheticians with an extra “degree” in acne. While dermatologists must know a little bit about the over 3,000 skin disorders they may encounter, we know a whole lot about the one skin disorder that we specialize in: acne.
As experienced acne specialists, we take a comprehensive approach. We study your diet and lifestyle. We also focus on your hair and skin care products. We look for pore clogging ingredients in your cosmetics, lotions and cleansers that may be contributing to your breakouts. There’s also the likelihood that your skin condition is genetic. We’ll work until we find the answers for you.
Acne is tricky, but not impossible.
