National Rosacea Awareness Month

April is National Rosacea Awareness Month. Rosacea affects 16 million Americans. That is 1 in 20 that have this condition. While there is no cure for rosacea, there are treatments that will control it and manage the redness.

There are 4 different subtypes of Rosacea

  1. Subtype 1 – Characterized by broken capillaries in the nose and cheeks.
  2. Subtype 2 – Also called acne rosacea which is characterized by pustules on the skin.
  3. Subtype 3 – Affects the nose, broken capillaries and can deform the nose.
  4. Subtype 4 – Affects the eyes or area around the eyes.

The two most common that we see at Atlanta Acne Specialists are subtype 1 & 2. Subtype 2 is the one that we have had the most success in treating.

Rosacea and acne are treated by dermatologists using oral and topical antibiotics. Many patients still don’t see much improvement. At Atlanta Acne Specialists, we choose to treat rosacea with gentle cleansers, moisturizers and a couple of preventative products.

Hot beverages, spicy food and wine can cause a flare up of rosacea. It’s really important to be gentle to your skin if you are prone to rosacea. Stay out of the sun, use gentle products on your skin, and make sure you use warm water only on your face.
