The Importance of Sunscreen

Why is sunscreen so important?

For our clients the main reason is because the products that are helping to keep your acne in check (Mandelic serum, Acne Gel, Revitalize, etc) also make you more sensitive to the sun.

What does that mean exactly?

In short, it makes it easier for you to get a sunburn. Sunburns damage the skin and can increase your chances of getting skin cancer later in life as well as cause dark spots, fine lines and wrinkles.

Another thing most people don’t know is that by not wearing SPF, their skin is also more susceptible to the UVA rays. These rays are the aging rays and they go deepest into your skin and cause the most damage with no immediate effect (no sunburn or adverse reaction).

We don’t see the damage these rays cause for 20-30+ years! I know many of you are VERY far from showing signs of aging. However, if you are in your 20s and considering an eye cream or retinol because you start to see some fine lines, you want to wear sunscreen.

When Should You Wear Sunscreen?

Every. Single. Day.

The spring is typically a tricky time of year for sunscreen. Yes, you should also wear it in the winter, but many people only wear SPF when they plan to be in the sun for long periods of time or near bodies of water. Think beach, pool or lake.

You might be outdoors for long periods of time and it’s only in the upper 60s to low 70s so you don’t think you will get a sunburn, only to look like a lobster later that evening. Sunscreen is super important to prevent burns and slow down the aging process.

That’s why we named our SPF The Everyday SPF30. I have a colleague who calls hers Daily Habit for the same reason. It is the #1 best anti aging habit you can do for yourself.

What’s so great about our Everyday sunscreen? What I love about our SPF is that it has moisturizer built in, goes on sheer and is lightweight and non greasy. We also have physical and tinted sunscreens available as well.

If this isn’t enough to make you want to wear it daily, here are a couple of photos that might help drive this home.

These photos are from UV damage received through a window. UVA rays go through glass, UVB (burning rays) don’t.

How do house plants survive inside? They get UVA rays through the window which promotes photosynthesis.

The first photo is a truck driver who drove a semi for 28 years and never wore sunscreen. Many of you who say you’re “inside most of the day.” You need it just as much as those who spend a lot of time outdoors.

The second set of photos is a woman had an office with a window where she worked for 15 years and never rearranged her desk. You can see the toll this took on her skin over many years of what didn’t seem like “sun exposure.”

To sum it all up:

  1. Acne prone people need sunscreen even more than everyone else because the products you use every day keep you clear.
  2. Wear sunscreen daily even when you work inside.
  3. Don’t let the temperature dictate your sunscreen habit.
  4. Make sure you have plenty of The Everyday SPF30 on hand.

Enjoy the sun but do it safely.
